Hot dog
Hot dogs are a treat any night of the week – our chefs pick the fresh ingredients and deliver them to your door.
A good hot dog comes down to a warm bun, a properly heated sausage and fresh toppings. Heat the sausage gently in a pan or on the grill rather than simmering it too long in water, so it doesn't shrink and dry out.
Classic toppings include mustard, ketchup, crispy fried onions, sauerkraut and fresh cucumber strips; in Finland, potato salad is often added too. For a vegetarian hot dog, use a veggie sausage or grilled halloumi with the same toppings.
A hot dog bake is a quick way to turn hot dog ingredients into an oven dish: mix sliced sausages, onion and a ketchup-mustard sauce, top with cheese and bake at 200 °C for about 20 minutes.
Split the bun and toast it briefly cut side down so it holds the toppings better and doesn't fall apart as you eat. You can swap the meat sausage for a vegetarian or turkey sausage without changing anything else in the recipe.
In Ruokaboksi's hot dog recipes the sausages and toppings come in the right portion sizes, so a weeknight hot dog dinner needs no extra trip to the shop.
